I have written about my 23 year battle with my body and dieting before. I tried everything and nothing worked (for longer than a few months).

I actually thought that by beating my body up, by judging it, by being hard on it, by starving it, by treating it badly, by restricting what I could and couldn't eat that I would lose weight and get the body I wanted. Oh and the big one, was that this would make me happy. My happiness and self worth were very much connected to my weight.


If you have read the 5 things I did to stop the dieting cycle, you will know that I was on a diet for nearly 23 years. When I decided I needed to end the dieting cycle I did a lot of reading to understand how our body works when it comes to physical hunger. I am going to try and explain this is in the simplest way possible.

We have a section in our brain called the hypothalamus. Its role is to control hunger and thirst. When we are hungry or thirsty, it will let us know. Imagine a thermostat that controls the room temperature, this part of the brain operates in the same way.
